Subjective symptoms of nitrous oxide inhalation as manifested in sensation, emotion
and cognition was studied from the seventy three dental students who inhaled nitrous
oxide which concentration was 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% in order.
1. The most common manifested at each concentration were symptoms of the smell,
of the nose, and of the limbs at 10%, symptoms of eyelids, floating sensation, being
pressed down sensation, and waving sensation at 20%, symptoms of the limbs, of the
body, of the visual sensation, of the sense of equilibrium, of the sense of touch, of
sweating of the blood flow, of the saliva flow, of the communication, dyspnea, anxiety,
fear, confusion in consciousness, drowsiness, sinking sensation, refreshing sensation
tedium at 30%, symptoms of heartbeat, nausea, sensation of satiety, and hungry
sensation at 40%, and symptoms of lips, of hearing, of the body temperature, thirst,
euphoria, sensation of body separating, and radiating sensation at 50%.
2. The most common symptoms manifested in sensation were trouble of sight, tingling
sensation in the limbs, fever, sweating and vertigo, that in emotion was euphoria, and
those in cognition were floating sensation, vague consciousness, and difficulty in
speaking.
